FEWER IMPORTS
PRE-CONTROL TENDENCY CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR Evidence that a process of readjustment in the importation of many lines of goods which are manufactured in New Zealand began several months before the Government took the recent step of licensing imports is provided by figures published in the current Abstract of Statistics. Particularly in the case of ready-made clothing, footwear, woollen and cotton piece goods, hosiery and wireless apparatus, reductions in imports over recent months have been most marked. Outstanding and significant exceptions to this trend are heavy goods required for public works and other construction schemes. These include electrical machinery, valued for the 10 months to the end of October at £2,320,000; iron and steel, bars, girders and other parts, £870.067; railway and tramway plant, which lias almost doubled in a year at £707,417; tractors and parts, £638,029: and dredging and excavating machinery, £298,701. against £53,691 for the same period last year. Recent Reductions However, because much of the equipment required by the Government for its various schemes has now arrived, it can be expected that a substantial contraction in most of these items will occur next year. The sharpness of recent reductions in the import figures for lines also manufactured in New Zealand, compared with just as obvious a rise last year, is shown by the following figures for the first 10 months of the last three years:
The total value of imports for the month of October was, however, considerably -greater than that of exports. Though less than the figure for September — £4,270,014, against £4,820,885—October imports were £2,10-4,-669 higher in value than the. exports for the month. For the lo months ended October exports exceeded imports by £4,388,283, compared with £11,582,413 for the corresponding period last year.
