BE WARNED IN TIME

In reading the incidents and stories sent me by our members for the pioneer book, I am struck by the number of districts, even in this little country hardly a hundred years old. where prosperous settlements have once been and have now disappeared. Northern Wairoa is one of them. I read of townships that have been abandoned, once Ihp scenes of bustling life, wharves that are being dismantled.

costs very little to take a good stock with you. Slip in an old favourite author. Believe me, to sit at an open window with a moving yarn is a rest to body and mind. Second, one should never be awakened on a holiday. If you can manage without a watch, do so, for there should be no such thing as time when holidaying. Personally, I refuse on my holiday to promise to go anywhere or do anything unless I am in the mood to do so. Early breakfast on a holiday is an abomination. Get plenty of sleep, and make no apology for being lazy. Third, let your- mind be at rest. Be quiet, and let Nature speak to you. The most precious thing in the art of conversation is to know when to say nothing. Nature will speak if you will listen, and you will find that the voice of Nature is the voice of God soothing your fretted nerves, and guiding your thoughts along the ways of peace. Follow these rules, and you will have a holiday worth remembering. —Rev. Gardner Miller, in the New Zealand Women's Weekly.
