TOPICS OF THE DAY
Need of the Times “The crying need of the times,” said the Marquis of Zetland in the House of Lords, "is a reorientation of outlook on the part of , mankind, so that things of the spirit rather than of the flesh may find once more their rightful place in the life of man, values which alone raise men above the animal kingdom. Any such changed outlook will only become possible if this menace of arms, which broods like poisonous miasma over the world, is removed, so that man may lift his gaze once more to the stars. Let us take every precaution that is possible to render ourselves safe against attack, but while doing that let us not lose sight of the supreme need of bringing appeasement to a tortured world, a need which the Prime Minister has seen with a greater clarity than is perhaps given to all men, the goal which he has pursued and is pursuing with ii tenacity of purpose which is horn of true insight and sustained by abiding faith. Never perhaps through the long centuries which have passed away since they were first uttered was there more significance than there is to-day in the words, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God’.”
