OBITUARY
MR S. D. CURRIE (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr Samuel Declmus Currie, member of a | well-known Waiuku family, who j settled in that district 80 years ago. I He was born in Waiuku in 1866 and was educated at the first school to !be erected in the district. As a young man he became interested in the formation of a volunteer corps and he joined the cavalry unit known as the Waiuku Mounteds, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant. Mr Currie was a former builder and contractor. As a carpenter he came to Te Aroha 50 years ago and contracted for the erection of the Tourist Domain buildings in partnership with the late Mr N. Hurse. After j spending some time in the Te Aroha district he returned to Waiuku and enlisted for service in the Boer War. He left New Zealand as a captain of the Fifth New Zealand Contingent and was in command of the Canterbury Squadron. Prior to going away he acquired an unimproved property at Manawaru. The late Mr Currie married in 1903 the eldest daughter of the late Dr. Clouston, of Waiuku. After the Great War he disposed of his farm property and spent some years in retirement at Auckland, later returning to Waiuku. He was a member of the Masonic Order and a prominent worker in the interests of the Presbyterian Church. Mr Currie is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters.
