CROSS STITCH PICTURES
These scenes are as quaint and pleasing as old-fashioned samplers—with their eight-to-the-inch cross stitch done in silk or cotton. No wonder they are popular for cushions or pictures ! Do them in one or varied colours. AT HANQATIKI SEVENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION The gathering to celebrate the seventh birthday of the Hangatlki branch of the Women’s Institute attracted a large attendance, the president, Mrs Pettigrew, presiding. The Institute banner and trophies were on display in the specially decorated hall, also the beautifully decorated cake. The president of the King Country Federation, Miss Crozier, and representatives of other branches were in attendance. Proceedings were opened with the singing of the National Anthem, after which the president welcomed the visitors. A bright programme followed, in which the Te Kuiti and Otorohanga branch members assisted. The dances by Miss Nancy Howes and a sketch, in w’hich four Hangatlki members took part, were enjoyed. The president was the recipient of numerous floral tributes prior to the conclusion of an enjoyable and entertaining afternoon, which concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” The branch Is steadily growing in membership. AT KIO KIO Mrs Luxmore presided over the last meeting of the Kio Kio branch of the Women’s Institute, when there was an unusually large attendance of members. A vote of thanks was passed to the Prime Minister of Britain, for his efforts to prevent a world war. The lamp shade competition resulted: Mrs K. Hall 1, Mrs Luxmore, 2. The guessing competition was won by Mrs Cowley. The monthly roll call was “Christmas gift selections.” A recherche afternoon tea was served by the branch.
WOMEN’S DIVISION RAGLAN-KARIOI BRANCH The Raglan-Karioi branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’
Union held its monthly meeting in the Town Hall supper room. The president, Mrs V. E. Pegler, expressed pleasure at the results of the spring flower show held on September 17, and which showed a net result of £8 17s 3d. Mrs Pegler thanked those who had helped to make the show such a success. The annual branch birthday party is to be held in the supper room on October 31. The Women’s Division and the Women’s Institute of Raglan are to hold a combined Christmas party for children, details of which will probably be available at next meeting. Short readings on subjects of interest were given by members of Raglan East section, who were hostesses for the day. The meeting closed with the serving of afternoon tea.
MATAMATA BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Matamata branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently, Mrs Goebel presiding. The meeting opened with the reading of the Greed. The roll call, "Sing, Sav, Whistle, or Pay,” brought some amusing responses. The competition, a butter sponge, was won by Mrs Shaw, Mrs Gould gaining second place. “The best boom in my garden” competition was won by Mrs Gould, with Mrs Hall second "and Mrs Anderson third. Mrs Buckley, -senr., won the parcel competition, the prize for which had been presented by Mrs Atkinson. Members brought a large number of parcels to be sent to the Makogai lepers. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Rallison and Hall. Next month there will be a demonstration of Christmas novelties.
OTOROHANGA BRANCH BIRTHDAY SOCIAL CIRCLE The Otorohanga branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its eighth birthday social circle in the Town Hall annexe, when there was a very large attendance of members and friends, including many members of the men’s branch of the union. An opening chorus by the social circle members,Nlesdames Irvine, Cook, Pye, Chaffey, Cleland, Maxwell, Hood, Buckland and Miss Walters, was much appreciated. Mrs Cleland entertained with songs and Mrs Horneraan’s impersonation of a Frenchman created much amusement.
The president, Mrs Pye, explained fully the meaning of the Women's Division badges prior to her address of welcome to members of visiting branches. She then sang the solo, “When Old Friends Meet Again,” with the chorus by the girls of the Division. Mrs Pye sang by special request, and elocutionary items by Mesdames Bradley and Still, fancy dancing by Mrs Dorothy McColl and two solos by Miss Walters were enjoyed. The Women’s Division girls’ item proved entertaining. The president presented Mrs Cook, the stage manager with a bouquet in recognition of her efforts as stage manager, accompanist and producer. Floral tributes were also presented to Mrs Pye by representatives of visiting branches of the Division and the Women’s Institute. Afternoon tea was served to nearly four hundred guests, the largest gathering of the kind held at Otorohanga.
The lighting of the eight candles on the beautifully decorated birthday cake was performed by the president, and they were extinguished by two past presidents, Mesdames Petersen and Irvine. Mrs E. 11. Oudaille generously donated the cake. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a memorable function.
