OBITUARY
MRS J. B. HOOPER Mrs Margaret Hooper, widow of the late Mr Joseph Ball Hooper, of Hamilton, who died in Wellington yesterday was born in Lyttelton and lived there for about 25 years, later going to Masterton. For some time she was a resident of Petone and from there she went to Thames, where Mr Hooper was licensee of the Junction Hotel. In 1007 they came to Hamilton and Mr Hooper took over the license of the Hamilton Hotel. Upon his death in 1016, Mrs Hooper continued in tlie capacity of licensee and in 1021 her son. Mr J. R. McKenzie, took over the license. The next year the building was burnt down. On the hotel being rebuilt, Mr McKenzie carried on the license until 1025. Mr Hooper built the Grand Central Hotel in 1012 and managed it for a number of years. About 1804 Mrs Hooper's first husband. Captain McKenzie, who was in charge of a torpedo boat stationed in Lyttelton Harbour, was drowned while trying to rescue one of his crew following an accident to the vessel. At the time a ministerial party, accompanied by the Rt. Hon. It. J*. Seddon, was inspecting the boat. Mrs Hooper's father and her two brothers were also master mariners and were all drowned at sea. Mrs Hooper took a keen interest in Rugby football, and her husband donated the Hooper Cup. which is still contested among hockey teams in Hamilton. Mrs Hooper had been living with her daughter, Mrs W. J. Olsson, Jlataitai, Wellington, for tlie last, few years and is survived by her daughter* and two sons. Messrs R. J. McKenzie and J. F. Hooper, of Hamilton. MR JOHN PATERSON A resident of Hamilton for the last. 23 years. Mr John Paterson, died at his residence in Kitchener Street vested lay. aged 78. The late Mr Paterson was born in Turriff. Aberdeenshire. Scotland, and he came to New Zealand 53 years ago by the Doric, lie settled in Wellington and became a builder. He was a successful business man and obtained many large contracts in the district, the last being the erection of the Wellington Town Hall. In J9O 4 he‘retired and in ID 15 came lo Hamilton Surviving the late Mr Paterson are his wife, four sons and one daughter. The sons are Mr John Paterson Hamilton . Mr Frank Paterson. Mr Waiter Paterson and Mr Harold Paterson Auckland . Mrs D. Mackie .Nelson; is the daughter.
