FAT PIGS DOWN

VALUES AT FRANKTON OX AGAIN IN REQUEST BRIGHTF,R TONE FOB SHEEP A sharp drop in quotations for fat pigs was a feature of the sale at Frankton yesterday, when moderate entries were on offer. A bright market tone characterised sales in the beef and mutton departments, where values were firm to slightly higher. Fewer cattle were forward, the market being the barest for some weeks. Ox beef was in the smallest supply since the market picked up a month ago and the entry comprised practically all prime beasts. One extra heavy prime Shorthorn steer made the tor money of £l9. t'his being 30s better than the previous top quotation t.hiF year. The market was fully firm throughout the sale and in some instances prices changed slightly in vendors’ favour. Heavy prime sorts were traded from £ls 9s to £l6 17s 6ri, while £ll to £l4 was paid for medium pens. Best ox was again quoted from 36s 6d to 40s per 100 lb. A feature of the sale was the consistency of the values realised, the bull; of (he pens selling above £l2. Cows and heifers were yarded in only moderate numbers and there was not such a large proportion of choice quality as has 'been the case during the iasl few weeks. The top quotation foi heifers was £l3 10s, while heavy prime cows were traded up to £ll 17f 6d. Values generally were fully firm and 30s to 35s 6d was the approximate price per 100 lb. A smaller entry of calves made fully late rates with an advance in some cases, while ■ tile variation was apparent for bonei cattle. Sheep and Pigs The presence of some of the best quality sheep seen at the yards for some time stimulated competition for mutton, and quotations, particularly for top lines, were slightly better thar last week. Most classes of wethers were firmer by roughly 6d to Is per head, while the same v could be said for ewes. One line of heavy prime ewes was auctioned at 29s 9d to 31s 9d, the highest price paid for ewes at the yards for some time. Top quotation for wethers was 345, againsl 33s 9d last week. Better quality hoggets were often a shade dearer. A sharp drop, sometimes up to per head, was recorded for both baconers and porkers, the decline being primarily due to the opening export schedule, which was announced or Monday. Baconers were auctioned from 65s to 81s per head in comparison with 70s to 83s, while porkers were sold from 355, to 58s, againsl 36s to 635. In sympathy with the drop in quotations for fats, values for stores also showed a sharp drop, large stores being generally 7s per head cheaper.
