SHOT DEAD
A CZECH SMUGGLER REFUSED TO HALT AT FRONTIER NEW BASIS OF NEGOTIATION United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright BERLIN, August 27 German customs officers shot dead a Czech, alleged to have been a smuggler, who refused to halt at the Czecho-German frontier at Neuaign, says a message from Berlin. A leading Czech publicist, Dr. Hubert Ripka, who is in very close touch with Dr. Benes, Czech President, says a message from Prague sets out what can be regarded as the Czechs’ last word. He says: “We are prepared to revise our proposals and adopt a new basis for negotiations, but will not accept anything involving our independence. “ Only the great Powers oan avoid the catastrophe of war by making Germany realise before It is too late mat an attack on Czechoslovakia would mean a European war. “ the hands of responsible French and British statesmen lies the decision whether peace will be maintained or will be shattered by a new and terrible war.” The German High Command has confiscated all photographs of the lOin. guns which were included among those paraded for the visit of Admiral Horthy last Thursday, and which visibly surprised foreign military attaches.
