WIN FOR NAVY

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL | SOUTH AUCKLAND DEFEATED j MARGIN OF THREE GOALS i I j Playing under adverse conditions, I and before only a small crowd, a Navy Soccer team from Auckland beat the South Auckland representative eleven by three goals to nil at Seddon Park on Saturday. The field was heavy and, although the play swung from end to end very quickly, the game was far from spectacular and at times was j inclined to become rather ragged. Considering that it was their firstouting together this season, the South Auckland players gave a good account of themselves and held the visitors well. Perhaps the best performance on the day was that- given by Webster in the South Auckland goal. The South Auckland full-backs, Hall and Clarke, were hard worked by the visiting forwards and they also acquitted themselves creditably. The teams lined out as follows: Navy. Whitehouse, Cotterell, Wakefield, Barnaby, Lund, Cox, Wilson, Brown, Hindmarsh, Chatten, Humphrey. South Auckland. —Webster, Hall, Clarke, Marshall, G. Crabb, McCall, Clarkson, Stewart, Wallace, Wvllie, Dave Crabb. Staunch defence by McCall drove the visitors' first invasion back but Cotterell and Wakefield were strong and Wallace was given no chance when in a handy position. Although the Navy forwards worked their way up to Webster’s goal, an infringement cost them the advantage and strong kicking by Clarke and Hall sent them back again. Clarke sent up a nice free kick, but Whitehouse showed a safe pair of hands and his team was soon on the run again. The home backs had their hands full for a time, and Brown decided matters when, taking a pass in front of the goal, he gave Webster no chance with a low shot into the net. Navy 1, South Auckland 0. Stewart figured prominently in a South Auckland rush shortly after and passed smartly when close up. Dave Crabb took possession, but spoilt the effort when he skied the ball over the bar. Stewart was working well and Clarkson also sent in several dangerous centring shots which kept the Navy backs on the move. They were sound defenders, however, and gave few chances away. Wyllie sent Clarkson away on a fast run and the home forward made the best of his opportunities. He made a very quick recovery when tackled, hut Wakefield was too quick for him and nullified his efforts. Wilson On Attack Wilson put in some pretty work on the side-line a short time later and gained a good deal of ground. However, McCall was a spoiling factor and ! held up the attack. Once again | Clarkson sent in a nice centre pass, ! but again the visiting defence was in position and lost no time in turning defence into attack. A couple of shots came Webster's way, but he was sound and cleared well. Evading Hall's tackle, Chatten got away well, but the bounce of the ball did not favour him and in a matter of moments the South Auckland forwards were on the run again. Cool, and showing clear judgment, Whitehouse gave a good exhibition in the Navy goal and cleared everything that came his way. With the swing of play to the other end again, Hindmarsh, who had been worrying Webster's goal cons's ently, drove in a few more hard shots. Fast Pace Maintained In spite of the heavy conditions the fast pace that had characterised the start was being well maintained and play swung back and forth very quickly. The Navy took up the attack again and practically all the forwards had tries at the South Auckland :oal. Webster gave a particularly creditable performance, however, and ffected several fine saves. The position looked black when Hindmarsh took possession and was unopposed in front of the goal mouth, but the South Auckland 'keeper was equal to his fast, low shot and once again the | play went out of danger. Half-time I came without addition to the score. | The fast pace of the first half was ! continued after the interval and the visitors carried the play ahead of Ihem. Hindmarsh drove hard at, goal, but Webster effected a smart onehanded save. Shortly after. Hindmarsh had another try, but his effort ; went astray and the resulting kick ! sent South Auckland away again. A j lack of penetrative effort in the, forj ward line caused the collapse of sev- ! cral handy South Auckland movements 1 and the naval visitors were not slow to grasp their opportunities. After a period of play in neutral territory . Wakefield came up fast and sent a i hard, low shot to Webster. The cus- ; todian cleared, but Hindmarsh took up j the rebound and made no mistake with : a drive into the corner of the net. ! Navy 2, Sotith Auckland 0. Home Forwards on Attack : The next shot from Hindmarsh was i well blocked by the 'keeper and a brief turn at attack was enjoyed by (he home forwards. Their efforts were to no avail, however, for White--1 house seemed to be equal to every- : thing that came his way. Play quiet- ; cned down for a time and rather in- ■ discriminate kicking was indulged in | by both sides. Led by Wyllie, the I home forwards got. away in a smart j run, but Dave Crabb lost possession and the Navy returned to the attack. Brown had a good chance when lie came into possession in front of Webster's goal hut his usual accuracy was missing and the shot went sadly astray. Once again Clarke was the chief instrument in turning defence into attack and the South Auckland forward showed up well to give Wakefield and Cotterell a busy time. The visiting forwards gradually worked their way down field and Hindmarsh <ent in a good shot. Webster made a rather weak clearance and Brown had no trouble in putting the ball into the net. Navy 3. South Auckland 0. The home forwards retaliated strongly shortly after, and Dave Crabb had a good run down the line. The defence was well mobilised, however, and once again turned defence into ■•Mack. Although the ball was travelling quickly, bright movements were becoming scarce and at times the play was becoming rather ragged. A couple ,| of shots from Hindmarsh did not \ trouble Webster unduly and he

■loared smartly. Although the Navy were getting plenty of chances they failed to make the best of several of them and again the venue returned to leutral territory. Barnaby sent up a i-e lob shot from well out and a few minutes later Cox tried the ’keeper with a hard drive. Webster was showing excellent form, however, and fast shooting was necessary to beat him. A fast rush carried the South Auckland forwards away and Stewart comdeted the movement with a try at goal. Whitehous was on the mark and sent the play away. The next South Auckland attack was short-lived and play finished shortly after in neutral territory with the score: Navy 3 South Auckland 0 Petty-Officer G. Grieveson was the referee.
