DAVIS CUP
(,)LIST'S GREAT RALLY DEFEAT OF JAPANESE BROMWICH MISSES VICTORY Uni led Press Assn.— Elec. Tel, Copjrrlgfci (Received Aug. 13, 3.15 p.m.) MONTREAL, August 12 In the Davis Gup contest A. K. Quist (Australia) defeated Nakano (Japan). G—3, 4—6, 9—7, 6—l. Yamagishl ; Japan, defeated J. Bromwich v Australia:, G—o, 3 —6, 7 —5, 6 —4. Quist in the first set against Nakano played a backcourt game ot the ou;set, but achieved more success when by forcing shots ho made openings and
followed up to the net. After many errors in the second set Quist seemed likely to lose the third as well, Ibe Japanese having set point at 6 —3. Quist then rallied magically, driving his opponent to the back lines and making inaccessibly angled returns to take the set. Quist was clearly superior in the final set. Yamagishi in the first set handled Bromwich’s service and returns at will and repeatedly caught ( his opponent flatfooted. The second set was a surprising contrast in which the Australian gave Yamagishi a tennis lesson, the latter striving hopelessly at times in an effort to reach the Australian's drives. The third se was very even, and the play good. Both lost their services repeatedly until after 5 all Yamagishi clinched his own service and then broke Bromwich's to take the set. In the fourth set Yamagishi ran to 4—2 and frequently passed Bromwich at the net or lobbed over his head. Bromwich evened the score, but the Japanese assumed the vital 5—4 lead which he quickly translated into victory.
