THE RED ARMY
EFFECT OF DRASTIC PURGE A SHORTAGE OF OFFICERS 10,000 MORE CADETS ENROLLED (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyrlgnu (Received June 13, 3 p.m.) LONDON, June 12 The Riga correspondent of the Times says that Voroshiloff has ordered the enrolment of 10,000 cadets as lieutenants in tile Red Army, without waiting for the completion of their course at the Army schools. The official reason is to enable the cadets to gain experience at the autumn manoeuvres, hut the real explanation is that the Red Army lacks officers, chiefly owing to the long-drawn and drastic purge, which has deprived the Army of between one-third and onehalf of its officers above the rank of lieutenant. Thousands have disappeared for reasons unstated, and great numbers described as traitors have been shot. Unrest is also reported in Soviet industry. Irregular supplies - prevent directors and engineers from fuelling their plans, consequently they are liable to prosecution for sabotage.
