WAIKATO TEAM
RUGBY FIFTEEN MATCH AGAINST AUCKLAND CHANGES IN THE FORWARDS The second Waikato Rugby repre--1 sentatfve fifteen which will play the j return match with Auckland, at Auck- ; land, on Saturday next has been ani nounced by the sole-selector, Mr J. | R. McKenzie, as follows: — | Fullback: L. Haworth (Cambridge), j Threequarters: L. Kelly (Cambridge), j R. Everest (Hamilton), G. H. Childs (Putaruru). Five-eighths: P. Hawke (Matamata), G. Hawke (Matamata). j Halfback: L. Russell (Morrinsville-). ! Back Row: J. Flannagan (Hamilton). Middle Row: J. G. Wvnvard (Waipa), J. Macky (Waipa), IR- L. Clarke (Waipa;, M. Warrender (Matamata). Front Row: M. Taylor (Taupiri), E. H. Catley (Taupiri), S. Harbutt j (Cambridge). Reserves: Backs, W. Brown (Matamata), Wakefield (Hamilton); forwards, A. .Thompson (Waipa), E. Hall (Cambridge). Three changes have been made in the team which played Auckland in Hamilton on the King's Birthday by (he replacement of W. Tombs, A. Thompson and L. McAlplne. Tomb’s place on the wing has been filled by L. Kelly, the Cambridge five-eighth, who has been playing good football | this season as an inside back. He ; will be sound on defence and his ! knowledge of the game gives him excellent tactical qualities- Although P. Hawke did not play an outstanding game as five-eighth in the fTrst match the selector is evidently anxious to experiment with the Hawke brothers’ combination. The new players in the forwards j are R. L. Clarke (Waipa) and J. Macky (Waipa). The former was a 1932 All Black when playing for Taranaki. Although older he has lost none of his polish as a forward and can still keep up with the ball better than the majority of the Waikato forwards. He should be an acquisition. Wakefield, the Hamilton five-eighth, may be considered unlucky not to have gained selection in the fifteen but he will assuredly gain a place later if Hawke does not play an improved game. The team will assemble at Hamilton at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday for training. SUGGESTIONS RECEIVED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sunday Communications have been received by the Council of the New Zealand Rugby Union from the California University and the California Rugby Football Board regarding tours. The former stated that it was prepared to tour New Zealand in July and August of 19.39 if this was acceptable to the New Zealand Union. The chairman said he understood that an application would come before the union for a tour of New Zealand in 1940 by a combined Oxford-Cam-bridge Universities team. Mr Ongley said he had been advised that the Pour would occupy seven or eight weeks. It was proposed to play 13 or 14 matches, including tests with the universities and others with various centres. The matter was left in the hands of Mr S. S. Dean to communicate with the New Zealand University Council and report.
