\EW ZEALAND BEATEN WIN FOR NEW SOUTH WALES

VICTORY BY 25 TO 12 United Press Assn.— Elec. T Copyrlgr’ ! SYDNEY, June 11 In spite of a magnificent open dis- ■ play in the first spell, .vhen it was definitely superior in many phases of the Rugby League code, New Zealand was defeated by New South Wales in the opening match of its tour to-day by 23 points to 12. There was an j attendance of 28.303 spectators. New Zealand held the lead until 13 ; minutes after the interval, when Kay j retired with a dislocated shoulder. After this stage the visitors were outweighted with a man short and were unable to resl.it an avalanche of tries. The score at half-time was B—38 —3 m New Zealand’s favour. Scorers for New South Wales were Dawson 2 . Narvo 3 . Goodwin and Bober. Williams kicked two goals. For New Zealand Kay and McNeight scored tries and Hemi kicked three goals. Evan with a full team on the field throughout it is extremely doubtful if New Zealand could have withstood the superior weight, back and forward, of New South Wales. Brilliant Football The first spell produced brilliant football, the visitors outpacing the opposition. featuring in mutual support positional knowledge. The visitors’ speed nonplussed the ; home backs, Broderick, McNeight and Herring often combining with the threequarte* s in dangerous rushes. New Zealand deserved a bigger lead 1 than B—38 —3 at the end of the spell, Hemi having failed with several kicks from : good positions. New Zealand pressed early and was j unlucky when McNeight, following a i charge clown, failed to gather the roll- ; lng ball five yards from the open line. Dawson opened the scoring, grubber kicking 30 yards down the wing and following- on. Kay equalised the score, accepting a pass from Tittleton when 1 Johnston failed to clear. Frequent Penalties New South Wales was frequently penalised, and Hemi goaled from the twenty-five yards line but missed two other easy kicks. Doubling round the threequarters, McNeight crossed at the corner, carrying three rivals over with him. New Zealand had much the bet- 1 ter of the spell. New Zealand faced a fairly strong breeze in the second half. Tt attacked with astonishing dash, and looked certain to score twice, but mishandling by the centres prevented tries. More- i over, two easy penalty goals were j missed. These lapses proved costly and from 1 this stage New Zealand was continue j ally defending. Weight began to teil and New South Wales repeatedly won i the scrums, but the visitors continued to tackle nobly. Kay Injured Kay was injured in tackling the winger, Goodwin, who scored at the corner. Tetley was placed at fi\eeighths and Tittleton at centre.. With 12 men New Zealand was outclassed. Wilfred Brimble gave good service with few opportunities in the second spell. He also .ackkd well. Chase was the best back. Herring and Brodrick were the outstanding forwards. Kay is unlikely to play for a fortnight.
