VETERAN BANKER
MR WATSON’S SERVICES TRIBUTE BY SHAREHOLDERS (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Speaking at the Bank of New Zealand annual meeting with regard to the impending retirement of Mr William Watson, Mr Norton Francis pointed out that Mr Watson had been president of the bank from 1894 to 1898 and from 1899 had served as director without a break. For 44 years he had seen the country grow from a colony suffering from the severe depression of the ’eighties and early 'nineties to the prosperous Dominion it is to-day. Mr Francis paid a tribute to Mr Watson's qualities of sound judgment and clear foresight, fair-mindedness and justness in his dealings and on behalf of the shareholders offered grateful thanks for his long and valuable service. A motion of thanks to the directors, general manager and staff was seconded by Mr A. E. Mabin and carried by acclamation. Mr Watson returned thanks for the remarks made concerning him and the general manager, Mr F. W. Dawson, replied for the staff, assuring shareholders that the officers had the interests of the hank at heart.
