SETTLERS FAREWELLED

PRESENTATIONS AT SPRINGDALE The Springdale hall was filled recently on the occasion of a farewell lendered Mr and Mrs T. Hitchman who have been resident in the district for twenty-six years. Effective’ decorations had been arranged in the hall and the evening took the form of a social. Music for dancing was supplied by Mrs W. Crowe interspersed with items. The' duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr W. Nicholson. On behalf of the residents Mr F. W. Walters, of Otorohanga, formerly of Springdale, said Mr and Mrs Hitchman had been willing helpers for the furtherance of the' district, Mr Hitchman had been secretary of the hall committee for 22 years. He presented the guests with a travelling rug with best wishes for the' future. Representing the church Mr J. Kelghtley presented Mr Hitchman with a suitcase and Mrs Hitchman with a toile't set as tokens of esteem from the congregation. Mr H. Wagstaff on behalf of the Drainage Board of which Mr Hitchman was a member, presented him with a case of pipes. Mr Nicholson also spoke after which musical honours were accorded. Mr Hitchman suitably responded. Items were given by Miss NWalters, Mrs H. Wagstaff and Mrs Qualtrough. Mrs Qualtrough being the accompanist. A novelty dance was won by Mr and Mrs F. O. Johansen. Mr B. Johansen carried out the duties of dance M.C. A delicious supper was served after which dancing was resumed. IVIRB R. THOMPSON HONOURED The ladles of the Rototuna district gathered at Mrs R. Thompson's residence recently to bid farewell to Mrs W. Hope. The time passed pleasantly' with games and competitions. Vocal solos by Mesdames G. E. Brown and J. Ward Chapman, accompanied by Mrs K. Macdonald, were much appreciated. Mrs S. Clements expressed regret at Mrs Hope’s impending departure and wished her happiness in her new home. Mrs J. Carson presented Mrs Hope with a beautiful travelling rug .with gifts for her children, and little Kathleen Jones presented the guest with a posy of white koromeaka and red berries. Mrs Hope, who was wearing an ensemble of brown wool moss crepe, suitably responded and was accorded musical honours. Those present were: Mesdames R. Thompson, W. Hope, G. E. Brown, H. J. Lllburn, A. E. Thomas, S. Clements, K. Macdonald (Morrinsvllle), Booth, Chapman, Martin, J. Holdaway, Evans, Whitman, 0. Jones (Hamilton), J. Carson, H. Russell, Bunning, Borman, Matheson, Totman. McKinlay, Josiah Carson. W. B. Young (Hamilton); Misses May Thompson, Grace Clements, Ena Baldwin, Rene and Grace Clement.
