NEW ZEALAND BUTTER

COMMENT IN CANADA AN ACCIDENTAL SHORTAGE The Winnipeg Free Press of recent date said— The butter shipped by New Zealand to Canada this season Is New Zealand’s first appreciable shipment to Canada in eight years. The two consignments are not, however, misleading the New Zealand dairy industry Into thinking a steady-export market lias been found, for the shortage being supplied is understood to be accidental. The shipments made amounted to 24,000 cwt, and were worth some £120,000 in New Zealand currency. This helped New Zealand farmers, but it is a drop in the bucket compared with export like that shipped from nine to seven years ago. That export fell away completely, till the 300,000 cwt shipped from New Zealand to Canada in 1930, and valued at nearly £2,000,000, dropped to less than 2000 cwt in 1935 and to less than 2500 cwt In 1936. The two shipments this year were 9000 cwt, shipped by the Aorangi to Vancouver towards the end of January, and 15,000 cwt shipped by the Surrey to Halifax early last month. Shipment of a third consignment, to weigh 6000 cwt, was being considered for later in February, but its export depended on Canadian regulation of imports. The spurt given butter* export helped New Zealand, but its temporariness was realised. Hope of it developing Into a continuous export trade is not Indulged in by the New Zealand dairy Industry.
