SHIPS COLLIDE.

Fridav Durimz the height of a 70-mile gale on Thursday night the express boat Bansratira. with 950 pa-sengers on Doarri, collided with 11.M.5. Achilles, damaging the warship’s propeller. ?he drifter! and grounded on a mudbank. but with the assistance of two power lUI tiigs was refloated at hieh tide. The Rangatfra was struck by the force of the gale as soon as her mooring lines wore cast off from the wharf. She cleared the Wanganelln. but her anchor and cable fouled the mooring lines of the cruiser, which snapped like threads, the warship being dragged away from the wharf and her propeller struck the concrete piles. The stern of the Bangatlra swung round and there was an ominous crash as her upper structure struck the bow of the cruiser. With her anchor drag£lng, th*> Achilles swung away from the wharf as the Bangatlra shot away. Minor damage only was done to the superstructure of the Hangatira. which proceeded on her way to Lyttelton. It is expected that the cruiser will have to be docked for repairs.
