EASTER HOLIDAYS.
The Easter holidays have come late in the year and probably for that reason alone they will be the more appreciated. As a rule the first quarter is not the busiest from a business point of view, but it finds the primary industries at the peak of activity. This year, however, all sections of the community have been occupied, and the brief sitting of Parliament tended to make the March quarter a little unusual. It seems likely that the idea of a slack period after the New Year holidays will have to be abandoned. In less strenuous days it probably was a fact but to-day it is not. New Zealanders are known far and wide for their desire to “get away” for the holidays, as they put it. This year apparently will prove no exception. The experiences of 1937, when the majority of the holidays were marred by wet weather, have been forgotten, and by rail, road and boat people are travelling about in large numbers. In all parts of the Dominion to-day, and it will be the same on Monday, races, sports meetings and other outdoor fixtures will attract thousands of patrons, and the road traffic particularly promises to set new records. This will impose an added responsibility on all motorists to exercise the maximum care. It is distressing to have the public holidays marked by a series of accidents, and in so far as these things can be reduced by the caution of those using the roads, it is to be hoped that this Easter season will establish a new and favourable record for the Dominion. Once the holiday is over there will be no lengthy break in the routine until the end of the year, but there will be many things to command public attention and interest. The problems, and the difficulties, both national and individual, will be more easily dealt with if the people enjoy good health, and that should be the real purpose of the holiday. Those fortunate enough to have a respite from work should return fitter physically and mentally to discharge the duties that are ahead.
