BRIDGE SUBSIDES

LORRY’S HEAVY LOAD MAIN HIGHWAY BLOCKED (By Telegraph.—press Association) WHANGAREI, Tuesday A major mishap occurred on the Whangarei-Dargaville State highway about 9 o’clock this morning. A lorry loaded with heavy machinery crossing the Awakino Bridge at the borough boundary broke the cross beams on the outside pile, sinking the decking about six feet between the piers. The wooden construction has been known to be due for renewal for some years. There were three lorries with machinery and the first driver felt the bridge sinking. The Second truck following close could not pull up. The driver accelerated and also got safely across, though the loaded trailer attached was thrown against the handrail, damaging it for about 20 feet. Traffic from Whangarei, Tangiteroria and Kirikopuni has the choice of two routes into Dargaville, turning from the State highway either at Tangiteroria, and easterly through Pukehuia, or at Tangowahine, passing through Onetea to joining the Waihue-Dargaville main highway. Traffic will be dislocated for a couple of days.
