RAZOR SLASHING
FIREMAN'S ASSAULT ATTACK ON PtAOKMAKKR (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday. "This is a rather bad case of its kind for an assault; it is one of those cases we hope will never come to New Zealand to any great extent,’* said SubJnspector McLean to the magistrate, Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, when Timothy James Downey (28), a fireman, was charged with assaulting John Henry Rowe at Port Chalmers on March 19 and with deserting from the Rangitata nt Bluff. He pleaded 'luilty. The Sub-Inspector said accused hod an argument with another member of the crew and Bowes sought to keen the peace. Subsequently In the engineroom accused asked Bowes why he interfered and then slashed him across the face with a razorblade. From the witness box Bowes said it was a safety razor blade. On the assault charge Downey was sentenced to two months’ gaol and on the desertion charge to six weeks’ fiaol.
