CARCASE COMPETITION
BACONER PRODUCTION It has been announced that prize money amounting to £IOO is being offered for the best line of six pigs carried through the winter and taken on to baconer weights in the spring. This offer is being made by Messrs W. and K. Fletcher (N.Z.), Ltd., to the four district pig councils in the Auckland Province by whom, in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, it is proposed the feeding trials should be run. It is hoped to show that the serious loss to the industry in sacrificing unfinished pigs in the autumn and again in not having sufficient store pigs to utilise milk by products in the early spring could be largely avoided by adequate feeding and proper management. Entries for pigs of 40/501b live weight must be in the hands of the supervisors of the district pig councils during April and entrants must sent in a line of six baconers to the Westfield Freezing Works not later than November 15 next. The Department of Agriculture, with the Meat Board have been asked to Judge the separate district competitions and also the inter-districts championship. Points are mostly allotted for market suitability (120 points), and conformation (20 points) making a total possible of 140 points. Ten points can be deducted for unevenness and 20 points can be deducted for disease. The enthusiasm with which this offer has been received augurs well not only for the “Tomoana” Baconer Wintering Competition but for the early oticcess of the developments which are now taking place in the pig industry.
