GARDEN PARTIES
SUCCESS AT MATANGI PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH FUNDS “Wartle,” the picturesque residence of Mr and Mrs J. Shaw at Matangi. provided an ideal setting for a successful garden party held recently in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian church. Glorious weather prevailed and a large number was present. Mrs French and Mrs J. Shaw as hostesses, received the visitors. Stalls in the shade of the lovely, old trees were well patronised. During the day a programme of sports was completed, while competitions including croquet, cooking, sheaf tossing, and weight judging, helped to augment the funds. Mr D. Fell and Mr Ferris, of Tauwhare, arranged an interesting display of boxing and wrestling, which was watched with interest by a large number of the visitors. Those taking part were: Mr A. Ramsay, of Tauwhare, Mr S. Kirkbride, of Matangi, and Messrs. Newton, Sharp, Bartlett. Shannon and Metcalfe, of Hamilton. Exhibitions of Highland dancing, by the Misses Pope and J. Mclnncs accompanied on the bagpipes by Misses Clothier and J. Cresswell, were also enjoyed. The cooking competitions in charge of Miss Elsie Shaw, and judged by Mrs Young of Eureka, brought forth a large number of entfies, the winners being: sponge sandwich without butter, Miss Alva Libeau 1, Mrs Davidson 2; sponge sandwich with butter, Mrs E. Thompson 1, Mrs J. Shaw 2; plain scones, Mrs Davidson i, Mrs Marychurch 2, Mrs J. Shaw 3. The croquet tournament arranged by Mesdames Allwood and Marychurch was won by Mrs Allwood and Miss ! Ruby Shaw with Mrs J, T. Bryant and Miss G. Hicks second. Other competition winners were: sheaf tossing, Mr Whitley 1, bar bending, ladies. Miss Ruby Shaw 1, men, Mr D. Faulkner 1, Mr N. Thompson 2. Judging the weight of a sheep was won by Mr W. Shaw. The cycle races resulted: senior, Mr Bill Cornes 1, Mr Trevor Hinton 2; junior, Tony Reid 1, Billy Cargill 2; married ladies’ race. Mrs Grant 1, Mrs J. B. Taylor 2; single ladies’ race, Miss Pope 1: single men's race, Mr Metcalfe 1. Mr I. Hinton 2; senior girls’ race, Rosie Dunham 1. Margaret Burnett 2, Alcye Grant 3: senior boys. ! Bill Pope 1, Arthur Taplin 2: junior girls, B. Ticklepenny l, Kathleen Bryant 2, junior boys. E. Teague 1, Clem Grant 2. Those in charge of the various • stalls were as follows: afternoon tea, j Mesdames Thompson, Jamieson and j helpers; fruit salad and ice cream, j Mrs T. Shaw, Miss R. Shaw, and as- j sistants; produce, Mesdames, Davidson, ; Robinson and Grant; cake stall. Miss D. Milne; sweets and soft drinks. Misses Ringer, D. Thompson, M. Davidson and 0. Cole; meat stall, Mr M. Jury. At the close of the afternoon’s entertainment the Rev. C. L. French, after presenting the prizes, thanked Mr and Mrs Shaw for the use of their lovely | grounds and those who had helped in j the organisation of the function. ANGLICAN LADIES’ GUILD AFTERNOON AT MORRINSVILLE About a hundred ladies attended the garden party held on Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs A. .J. Shop- : herd. Coronation Road, Morrinsville. bv ! the ladies’ guild of St. Matthew's Ang- I lican Church. Good business was * transacted at the various stalls and | in competitions. ( The spacious lawns made an ideal i setting for such a gathering. After- ; noon tea was served by member* of tlie guild, including Mesdames F. 11. Stretton .president . y. i. Crickett (secretary . L. Aiken, R. Hill. C. B. . Davis, D. Jones and A. R. Mayo. Mesdames J. Boles and A. L. Waters were in charge of the general stall. Clock golf was played under the direction of Mr Shepherd, ami ladder croquet and bullseye «croquet were supervised by Mrs Mason.
