MILK SHORTAGE
EFFECTS OF DRY WEATHER PROSPECTS FOR THE WINTER TEMPORARY LICENSES SOUGHT "Owing to the prolonged spell of dry weather and the intense heat, there is every indication that there will be a serious shortage of milk t.o supply the needs of Hamilton in the approaching winter,” said Mr F. Lye, of Cambridge, when speaking to a Waikato Times representative to-day. The estimated shortage was discussed at a recent meeting of the Hamilton Milk Vendors’ Association, continued Mr Lye, and concern was expressed by members at their inability at present to obtain adequate supplies. It was resolved that representations should be made to the stock division of the Department of Agriculture with a view towards having temporary licenses granted to enable farmers who had milk supplies available, and whose premises were satisfactory, to help the milk vendors out of a very difficult position. It was very definitely stated that supplies of milk from now until the spring would be shorter than for many years past. In addition, the shortage of supplies had been responsible for the recent increase in the wholesale and retail prices of milk. Although the prices had recently been increased in Hamilton, the people here were getting their milk considerably cheaper than it was being retailed in Auckland. Vendors here were most anxious not to increase the prices any further if it could be avoided and if their difficulties in securing adequate supplies could he overcome. “Another matter on which the association would like a lead from the public of Hamilton is the manner of distribution,” said Mr Lye. “It has been suggested that the entire organisation of the industry should be revised with a view towards introducing the universal use of bottles or cartons. Such a move would undoubtedly improve the standard of the supply, but at. the same time it would mean a slightly increased cost. An expression of public opinion on this matter would be welcomed by the association ”
