Bridges and roads are blocked by landslides. One thousand people are homeless. Rescue workers followed the receding waters searching for bodies in the debris. More than half the listed dead were missing, their bodies having been washed out to sea and lost. Aeroplanes are dropping food in some areas. The drinking water failed at Malibu Beach, the cinema colony. Rain water Is being hoarded. A quarter of Los Angeles was in darkness throughout the night. Film Star Rescued Madeleine Carroll, the English film actre-ss, was rescued from her home after being marooned for twenty four hours. One hundred wealthy tourists, including cinema players, are stranded at the exclusive Palm Springs resort. An aeroplane is prepared to carry there milk, bread, butter, meat and live hundred candles.
