SLOWER MARKET

EWE VALUES DROP DECLINE AT MORRINSVILLE FAT STOCK IN KEEN REQUEST A distinct recession in values for breeding ewes was experienced at the weekly Morrlnsville fair yesterday when close on 20,000 store sheep, representative of East Coast, North Auckland and southern districts, were on offer to a large bench of buyers. Bidding came slowly throughout the sale and even on top quality lines little enthusiasm could be aroused, the depreciation in values being most marked in the auction of two-tooth lines. It would be safe to say that there was a general decline pf 5s per head over all lines. A line of 4 and 5-year-old southern ewes sold at 24s lOd, while 2s above this figure was realised for larger framed ewes of the same age. six-year-old sorts from the East Coast were bought for 21s, while a line of 44 5 5 and 6-year-olds from North Auckland was knocked down at 22s Id. Five-year-old sheep from the Eact Coast were traded at 21s lOd. Quite a considerable proportion of the 2-tooth sheep failed to reach vendors' reserves. Best sorts in this division were auctioned from 33s 3d to 34s 9d, while small sorts sold from as low as 21s Gd to, 265. The sale of 2-looths was in marked contrast to previous sales.

Good Demand For Beef Although there was little prime beef on offer, the demand was keen and values were often firmer. The bulk of the entry comprised plain dairy sorts which were readily traded. A few choice cows sold from £8 to £9 17s 6d. A light entry of fat sheep was in good request and values remained firm for all classes. Medium ewes made from 14s to 15s 6d, while lambs changed hands from 18s 3d to 235. One outstanding line of ewe lambs in the store section sold at the good figure of 24s lOd. Fat pigs were again keenly sought and values for both baconers and porkers remained firm at central yard rates. Store pigs, if anything, were a shade firmer. Farmers’ Auctioneering Company The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Limited, report on the sale as follows: A medium entry of fat sheep came forward comprising chiefly light-weight wethers and lambs. Competition was good and late rates were fully maintained. A good entry of store lambs included the advertised line of ewe lambs ex Tauwhare. This was a particularly choice line and realised the satisfactory price of 24s lOd, other store lambs sold at late rates. There was a particularly large entry of breeding ewes both from the East Coast and southern districts, the offering including a big proportion of 2-tooth ewes which were dull of sale, while other ewes also suffered a sharp decline on last week’s values. Most 2tootli and all classes of ewes were down by fully 5s per head. In spite of this fact many of the vendors met the market and a good clearance was effected. A good yarding of cattle came forward comprising mostly stores and a heavy entry of bulls. Bidding was brisk throughout and a total clearance effected with prices extra firm on all classes. There was a full entry of fat pigs and a medium entry of stores and weaners. Competition for baconers and porkers was steady, prices remaining firm at late rates. Store pigs showed a slight advance on last week's sale.
