WONDERFUL ESCAPE
CAR GOES OVER WHARF MOTORIST’S PLUCKY ACTION PLUNGE INTO HARBOUR (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Friday Trapped In a car when It went over the end of the Devonport vehicular ferry wharf early this afternoon, Mrs. Rebecca King, of Warkworth, was rescued In a sensational manner. Frederick Gardener, of Whangarel. aged about 35, was seated in his car, two further back in the queue. Re ran forward, and dived into the harbour fully clothed. Mrs. King, who had been submerged >nds, i-o.sc to the sufface. She got out. of the car through an open door. Gardener reached her and swam with her to the wharf, holding on to a pile for several minutes before being rescued by a speedboat. Mrs. King was examined by a doctor and sent to a private hospital. She had a slight cut below the throat and was suffering badly from shock, but she is progressing satisfactorily. It is understood that Mrs. King’s car would not start as the cars were moving forward to go on the ferry boat. Mr. King alighted to push the it the wheel. The engine suddenly accelerated and the car went over the end of the wharf.
