The. bed of the Otira River at the new traffic bridge was raised between Bft. and 10ft. At Goat Creek, boulders hurtled downstream from the gorge, roaring like thunder. Thousands of ! stones were brought down and the river level reached Ihe bridge railings. Large wash-outs and slips occurred in the district. 17ie main road through Otira was transformed into a river course and much property was flooded.
