TE RAPA TRIALS
SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS GOLDEN SHEILA IMPREBBEB RESPECTFUL—AUSTRALIAN STAi» (By “Martian”) Conditiors were ideal at Te Rapt this moin.ng when the semi-final gallops for the Waikato Racing Club’s Summer meeting on Saturday and Monday took place just on 65 feet out from the rails. The going was fast and several Interesting trials were recorded the best of the morning being those of Golden Sheila over hali'-a-mile and Respectful and Australian Star over five furlongs. Roliicker (N. R. McKenzie) and Royal Bachelor (G. L. Goulsbro) ran six furlongs in 1.23, time on which they could have improved. Both are looking in splendid order for engagements at the local meeting and they ••mould form a strong combination for *4 me Julian stable among the sprinters at the meeting. Whirling (N. R. McKenzie) strode easily over half-a-mlle in 555. He looks a picture of condition. He is not an acceptor for the first day of the meeting but if produced on the Monday he will not lack a following in the betting. Star Artist Well Star Artist (C. L. Goulsbro), who has been working consistently well of late, hit out over seven furlongs in 1.35. She was doing her work well throughout and will lack little on the score of condition for pending engagements. Forest Acre (N. R. McKenzie) ran home from the five in 1.8. This member of the Carmont stable has been making good progress in recent weeks and may show to advantage at the approaching meeting. Susan and Centaurus ran five furlongs in 1.9 1-5. The best figures of the morning over five furlongs were those of Respectful (J. McLaughlin) and Australian Star (H. Long) who came home practically on terms in 1.7. They cut out their first two furlongs in 25$s and were sticking on solidly over the concluding stages of the trial. Australian Star has been making steady progress of late and should show to advantage in the Trial Stakes on the first day here. Prince Rangl—Lagoon Prince Rangi (J. Winder) and Lagon (W. Thomson) were associated over six furlongs cutting out the full distance in 1.22, Lagoon finishing in front at the completion of the effort. Lagoon will be having her first start for a spell at Te Rapa this week. Prince Rangi is well and should give a good account of himself in the Beerescourt Hack on Saturday. Dark Shadow (J. McLaughlin), Cometarium (N. R. McKenzie) and Gay Streak (A. Gilmer) were associated over a mile the full distance occupying 1.49, the first half-mile in 52 4-5 s and five furlongs in 1.8. It was a * useful effort on the part of all three. Dark Shadow is in good heart for the Storey Memorial. Handicap on Saturday while interest will attach to the showing of the improving Cometarium, whose efforts on the track of late indicate an early return. A Smart Half-mile A solid half-mile effort was credited to Golden Sheila (J. Winder), who finished a length in front of Friskland (W. Thomson) and Bronzette (H. Long) in 51£s, the best figures by far of the morning over the distance. Golden Sheila has performed well at Te Rapa in the past and while she has not raced since the Railway Handicap she should, nevertheless, give a forward account of herself among the sprinters on Saturday. Green Label (N. R. McKenzie) was doing better than Paunui (J. McLaughlin) and an Acre filly (Gilmer) over half-a-miie in 54£s. Green Label is showing improvement. The consistent Tosh (J. F. Fergus) came home smartly from the half-mile in 52is. He looks none the worse for recent qfterlions ancl promises to strip in splendid fettle for Te Rapa engagements. L'Allegro (A. Gilmer) ran seven furlongs in 1.41 4-5. Trilliarch (W. Thomson) and Sinking Fund (H. Long) finished abreast at the completion of seven furlongs in 1.34, the last six furlongs being cut out in 1.20 1-5. Trilliarch is in good heart for racing ahead, being an acceptor for the open mile the first day here. Master Brierly (Winder) finished several lengths clear of Racette (Main) over a round in 2.5. It was a useful effort on.the part of Master Brierly, one of the early ruling fancies for the big event on Saturday. He has been shaping consistently well .on the tracks of late and it will not be on the score of condition if he fails to give of liis best this week. A Useful Half-mile Desert Wings (W. Thomson) and Fast Acre. (N. R. McKenzie; ran home from the half-mile in s*2is, a useful effort for horses of their class. Vitement and Kingscraft brushed over three furlongs along Hie back in 38s. Kingscraft is engaged in the Juvenile Handicap the first day and it will be interesting to note how he shapes. Mangukaha (W. Thomson), from practically a standing start, ran half-a-mile alone in 52 4-ss. She is fit and well and may win when the tracks are soft. Jumpers Schooled Sand-drift (R. E. Thomson) and Windsor Lass (J. Muir) were associated over four hurdles, the former giving a good display. Windsor Lass went well until the third obstacle where she nearly came down. Desert Star (R. E. Thomson) handled two flights of hurdles in dashing style. Hiding engagements for the first clay of the Waikato meeting include: R. McTavish: Forest Acre. J. McLaughlin: Holly Lu, Miss Clipper. N. R. McKenzie: Attack. Cappy, Rereatu. Jonathan. W. M Thomson: Lagoon. Mangukaha. Desert Wings. Little Artist. H. Long: Yalimeen, Lornacre, Cometarium. A. Gilmer.—Gascyne, Australian Star.
