THE AUCKLAND CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING OPENED WAIHEKE TO KETE KURA HORSEPOWER WINS DERBY CHIEF EVENT TO KENWORTHY (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Saturday The February meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club was opened to-daj at Epsom in showery weather. Ther< was a fair attendance and the track was cutting out following heavy rain. Winner trained by owner, Mangere. Always handily placed throughout the latter stages or the races Kete Kura finished too strongly for the remainder of the field in the Walheke Handicap. Forest Jewel looked a winner but faded out over the last 100 yards. Sunny Parrish, Harlow and Blue Crest were slow to go and Lady Potts made the early running from Tommy McElwyn, John’s Last, Vanora, Worthy Quest and Kete Kura. Forest Jewel had assumed command passing the stands and at this stage was showing the way to Vanora, John’s Last, Silver Bullet, Lady Potts and Captain Scott. Forest Jewel was followed by Vanora and John’s Last along the hack and across the top, while this trio were in the same order as the field sw’ung for home with Kete Kura right up next in front of Captain Scott, Ratepayer and Ladv Potts. Kete Kura did best in the run home to beat the tiring Forest Jewel by a head. Ratepayer was one and a-half lengths away in front of Roma Girl, Wall Street, Vanora «nd Captain Scott. Pirate’s Last, the favourite, Just got up In tune to heat Worthy Lu, on the post in the Trial Handicap alter the latter had the advantage of a big lead practically throughout. Etia Girl was the first to move but after half-a-mlle had been covered Worthy Lu had established a lead of 7 0 yards over Mah Jong with Win Huon and Pirate’s Last next lr. order. Entering the back stretch Worthy Lu was 50 yards clear of Win Huon with Mah Jong and Pirate’s Last in that order of the others. Worthy Lu still had a commanding margin at the straight entrance but Pirate s Last came home very rust to catch Worthy Lu on tlie post and win hy a neck with Win Huon three lengths away third in front of Within and Pink Lady. The favourite Horsepower ran to the front just prior t-o the field swinging for home and he was not troubled to win comfortably by three and a-half lengths. Uenuku was handy but broke twice in quick succession and ruined his chances. Equipoise was the only one to make a mistake earlj*, Sanduv ky making t hepace from Hillcrest, Axminster, Uenuku, Refund and Horsepower. Passing tlie stands Refund had taken up the running from Uenuku with Sandusky, Horsepower. Hillcrest and Axminster in that order. The only alteration along the back was that Horsepower commenced to improve his position and crossing the top Refund who was in the lead broke and Uenuku was just in front of Horsepower and Sandusky. Uenuku broke twice berore the straight was entered and Horsepower, who lead here, went on to win cpmrortably by three and a-half lengths from Sandusky who

beat Axminster by three lengths. Refund was fourth and then came Hillcrest and Uenuku. Times, 3.38, 3.39 3-5, 3.41 2-5, 3.42 2-5. OTAHUHU HANDICAP Of £400; limit 4.35; 2 miles 2—2—KENWORTHY. Mr S. A. Kenworthy holding oil' a strong challenge from Kewple’s Triumph, while Star Pronto, who was also in the running at the straight entrance broke at a critical stage. Noble Prince was the first to show out from Star Pronto, Kewpie’s Triumph and Kenworthy, but at the end of three furlongs Noble Prince broke badly and extinguished whatever chances Lady Fame had. Passing tne stands the first time Star Prcr.to v."s making play from Kewpie* Triumph. Fernbrook Lass. Crocus. Kenworthy and Our McKinney. There was no alteration at the conclusion of a circuit and entering the back ?tretch star Pronto was showing the way to Kewpie’s Triumph, Fernbrook Lats. Kenworthy who was moving up.. Crocus and Our McKinney. Kenworthy had moved up alongside star Pronto at the straight entrance this pair being three lengths clear here from Kewpie’s Triumph and our McKinney, Kenworthy came through at the distance and held off a further challenge or Kewpie’s Triumph by one and a-half length-, star Pronto was a length away in front oC Our McKinney.
