FIERCE GALE
GREYMOUTH SWEPT MUCH DAMAGE REPORTED (Special to Times.) GREYMOUTH, Friday Following a rapid drop in the barometer, a north-westerly gale struck Greymouth this afternoon and • iiii considerable damage. The gale appeared to he confined to the district as the w*\ither at Westport t,nd Hokitika remained mild. Minor damage was done to telegraph lines, high winds causing many contacts of wires on the Reefton line and th< Greym >uth-West port coastal road. The wind reached a force of 49 to 56 miles an hour at times, and shattered wireless poles and fences, and in several cases blew in windows and sk; lights in the business area, while i . irge m ss on tent in Boundary Street was blown down. There was a break in the power supply which was traced to a high-tension line in Bright Street, Cobden.
