ABANDONED FARMS

CANTERBURY PROBLEM CONVERSION INTO 'FORESTS? (Special to Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday “ That is an admission of defeat/* observed Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P. for Te Muka, when the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone, stated that abandoned farms at the Tripp Settlement near Geraldine, would have to be turned over to tree planting. The Minister replied that forestry was as much farming as sheep or grain and there would be a return from it. He mentioned the possibility of legislation declaring certain farms uneconomic areas so that they could be rented at a nominal charge. Settlers adduced evidence that the gross return from some farms scarcely exceeded £IOO a year. The Minister said the major trouble seemed to be that the sections were too small and Mr Burnett agreed that the settlement was foredoomed to iailuie from the start. The Minister said that the cases would be heard by the Adjustment Commissions, that the amalgamator c-i holdings would he considered, and that the Department of Lands would I conduct experiments in soil reconditioning.
