BT. GEORGE'S Well, here we are again, starting off the year 1938 with a big- splash. We met again for the new year with a good attendance of 24 present, including one of our old members in Bill Meldrum, who Is down here on holiday from King's College. Glad to see you again, Bill, and we hope you will be able to get along any time you happen to be in town. We also had present one of those ever-persistent “ Hamutana ” 'Rovers in the shape of Gus. After flag break and fall in. the Keas were presented with the Diggers’ Cup Tor gaining the greatest number of points for the past year. Next on the programme was the presentation of badges gained during the year. After that we formed tentative teams for the rally and then had plenty of fun having a go at the signaltower, with some rather humorous results. He Doesn’t Laugh Now T should hate you to think that anything could happen to prevent a fellow rrom laughing. Laughter is good for everyone. It might have been better to have said: “He doesn’t laugh at us any more.” Let me explain. He was a workman, and I overheard him telling the yarn to a fellow workman. “ Bill,” he said. “ I used to laugh at them Boy Scouts with their bare knees and big ’ats. But not now! No Tear I don’t! I was on a job last week, hauling machinery from a lorry to the top floor of a building, when the rope broke. It was Saturday an’ we wanted to get away to go to the football match. It looked like we'd have to send _for another rope, an’ that would i have’meant missing the match, when up I comes a Boy Scout who ’ad seen wot ’ad i ’appened. “ * You won’t need to send for a rope.’ says he, ‘ ir you know how to do a splice.’ And then, afore we ’as time to say a 1 word, he starts work. Lumme, tn a Tew minutes he ’ad Joined the rope as neat as neat, you could ’ardlv see the join, an’ it went through The pulley smooth as you like. Cheeky little beggar he was, too. Just laughed when I offered him a tanner, and’ told me to treat meself to an Ice-cream at the match. No, I ain’t ever goin’ to laugh at them Boy Scouts no more.”
