A VISIT TO SYDNEY

A FASCINATING CITY | i | THE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Sydney is a fascinating city. it “gets’* one. Just now it is more | fascinating than ever, for it i* very gay with the anniversary celebrations. Gaily beflagged. brilliantly illuminated ‘ at night, and with its big population 1 supplemented by many thousands **t visitors, the city is full of colour and ' movement. At night particularly, with . all the illuminations, it is a fairyland. To a New Zealander the parade ot | floats In the “Australian March to j Nationhood” procession was a gr*»at I thrill—something not likely to lie seen I anHin. With over a mill!' « m lining the route, the many floats, each ■ illustrating a section of Australian *L.- ' velopmcnt, were loudly cheered. j We gave a special cheer to the j New Zealand athletes in the preliminary procession, and to the New Zea- ! land float—an effective representation of New Zealand life —in the main parade. The crowds were very happy, despite the fact that many of the people had been parked there all night. It was a sight never to be forgotten. Venetian Carnival and Fireworks And what can one say of the Venetian carnival and fireworks display? I have never seen anything so beautiful In my life- Hundreds of thousands of people lined the waterfront in the Domain, joined lustily in community singing, and thrilled when suddenly the lights were turned on—and the whole Domain (even the trees) were floodlit and every vessel on the harbour was outlined in brilliant lights. It was a wonderful scene, indescribable in Its beauty. Then came the fireworks display, with the air full of the most beautiful pictures in coloured lights. The searchlight exhibition, with the whole of the heavens criss-crossed with weird bands of light, was followed by the parade of decorated and illuminated boats—a striking procession round Farm Cove that roused the huge crowds to tremendous enthusiasm. Sydney certainly rose to the occasion with its anniversary celebrations.
