GOLF COURSES

GREENKEEPER6 CONFER SUCCESSFUL RESEARCH (Special to Times.) PALMERSTON N., Friday The sixth .annual conference of the Greenkeepers’ Association is in progress at the Hokowhitu golf course, where the experimental plots under the control of the green research committee of the New Zealand Golf Association are situated. Mr Alfred Seifert, chairman of tlie greens research committee, welcomed some 36 greenkeepers from the golf courses throughout New Zealand. Over the last two years there had been more improvement in the playing condition on courses than there had ben in any period during the last 10 years, said Mr Seifert, and this he attributed to the knowledge gained at these conferences, and the closer touch the members had with the scientific investigations being carried out on the plots at Palmerston North. He again stressed the necessity of golf clubs being visited by the greens research advisory officer, Mr W. M. Horton. Weed Control Mr E. Bruce Levy, B.Sc., director of research, addressed the visitors on his recent visit overseas. Speaking on the subject of weed control he said that, the method of spraying Avith arsenic pentoxide, which was evolved by the Scientific and Industrial Bureau at Palmerston North was in universal use throughout the world and that he had not found any better method in the course of his travels. Mr W. M. Horton, field advisory officer and supervisor of research areas, conducted the visitors over the plots at Hokowhitu and described the experiments carried -out in the area. Several papers were read to the conference, including one by Mr 11. X. Gough, head greenkeeper of St. Andrews, Hamilton.
