CARTAGE LICENSES

PUBLIC WORKS MATERIAL OPERATIVE FOR ONE YEAR ONLY No. 1 LICENSING AUTHORITY

A direction to carriers that in cases where applications were made for licenses to carry material for the Public Works Department, the policy of the No. t Licensing Authority was to communicate with the public Works Department, in order to ascertain that the department eouid offer work for the applicant, stated the No. 1 Authority. Mr L*. T Phelan, at a sitting in Hamilton to-day. Mr Phelan reiterated his warnings to carriers that the Public Works were at, present operating to their maximum extent and. if the number of carriers working for fhp Deparlment were added to, then the position for the original license-holders might become difficult and cause price-cutting. The Authority has decided that no license for permission to operate on Public- Works Department schemes ■'♦ill be granted for a period greater than one year. It was Imperative that there should be sufficient work for those already licensed. Mr Phelan said that applications from carriers who had been working for the Public Works Department for a considerable time would receive more favourable consideration from him than would those who had entered the service during the recent busy period. Amalgamation Favoured

I “ The time has arrived when there | should be amalgamation of carriers* j association, which would give more uniformity of control.' 1 staled the Authority when it was evident that several associations were at variance as to the allocation of licenses. By the prevention of “ pirate ” carriers, the associations could do valuable work, but this was lessened by | petty quarrels between different asso- ; ciations. Live Stock Cartage ! In future applications for licenses I to carry live stock would be restricted and seriously considered before being ! granted, stated the Authority.
