SINGAPORE BASE
MENACE REMOVED SERVING IN THE PACIFIC VALUE OF THE NEW BASE United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. CopyrigrDl (Received Feb- 10, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 9 “The completion of the Singapore Naval Base removes a potential danger to Australia and New Zealand, as well as lndo-Malayu,” declares the Manchester Guardian in a leader. ‘’Without Singapore no battleship could have been sent into the Pacific in an emergency without grave danger, of loss. No other position could be found with greater strategic strength, while less threatening other powers. “There is not a country which can reasonably complain that it is intimidated. On the contrary, only a country seeking the whole of the East could one day find in Singapore an obstacle to its unnatural ambitions. “Australia and New Zealand are not alone in feeling that their defences are inadequate for their present needs, but concern is growing in Frencn Indo-Chlna, the Dutch East Indies and elsewhere.”
