SYSTEMATIC BLACKMAIL
ACOUBED FOUND QUILTY REMANDED FOR SENTENCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Allegations of systematic blackmail over a period of four years lay behind two charges of making threats for the purpose of extortion, wnich were preferred against Joseph Dyer In the Supreme Court to-day. The Jury found Dyer guilty and the accused was remanded for sentence. Complainant gave evidence along the lines of Mr Donnelly’s address. Accused, in evidenoe, said that any money that changed hands was in repayment of loans between the two. There had never been any discussion or reference to assault charges In conwith money payments. Mr Donnelly: You have accused Detectives Halcrow and Watt of fabricating part of your statement Accused: %o. Were the statements you mads to them true?—Some were partly true and some were not. Aceuaed said that many of hie answers to the detectives’ Questions were gi'en on the 6pur of the moment. Both the statements he made to the police and to the Pensions Department were incorrect.
