SIX DISTRICTS “DRY” LORD ERSKINE CONFORMS Six districts in the United Provinces will •go dry" in Hie next financial year. This decision, taken by the United Provincial Ministry, has been approved by the provincial Congress Party. The districts where prohibition will be introduced as an experimental measure are: Utah, Mainpuri, Aligarh, Bijnor, Sultanpur and Buland- ■ shahr. The Central Provinces and Berar Pro- ! hbition Bill was introduced tills month j in the Central Provinces . Legislative: Assembly. It consists of 12 clauses! modelled on the Madras Prohibition i Act. In addition to making provi-! sion for the effective pr^ention, 1 detection, investigation and prosecution of offences it stipulates collabora- j lion of anti-drink committees of lion- i orary workers with the Prohibition j Officers. i Prohibition is already in force in Salem district of Madras Presidency. The widespread interest aroused by the Ministries’ activity is shown by a report from Assam which describes how an aboriginal tribe in the Garo Hills met in conference and decided to give up brewing and drinking and to excommunicate anybody acting contrary to this decision. The tribe also resolved that henceforth men should plough the fields and women sow* and reap. At present there is no clear-cut division of labour. The Governor of Madras, Lord Erskine, has decided Unit lie and his staff will not take alcoholic drinks at public functions arranged in his honour during his tour in Salem district.
