HOLIDAY ACCIDENTS

TOLL OF THE ROAD MAN AND WIFE INJURED COLLISION AT A BEND (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday While rounding a bend on the Great South Road south of Te Kauwhata, on ' New Year’s Eve, a car driven by Mr Ronald Thomas Barley (55), of Mount Eden, collided with another car going in f7ie opposite direction and driven by Mr Thomas Edward Jamieson, herdtester, of Drury. Abdominal injuries were received by Mr Barley. His wife, Mrs Elizabeth Barley, and his daughter, Mrs L. Paul- ' son, of Kaitaia, who were passengers in the car, received abrasions and shock. Mfs Barley, who with her husband was later admitted to the Wai- ' kato Hospital, suffered fractured ribs. Mr Jamieson and a passenger, Mr W. Evans, of Ngaruawahta, escaped with bruises and minor cuts. Mrs Barley was discharged from! hospital to-day. Miss Gladys Wilson (34), of Wool-’ ston was killed and seven others in- j jured when a seven-seater motor-car! went off the main Christchurch-Akaroa ; road at the Barry's Bay Hill, near Duvauchelles, and somersaulted about. 50ft. down a slope to the bottom of the valley. The injured were:—Mrs Emma Wilson, mother of Miss Wilson, also of Woolston, severe head injuries and shock, condition serious; Mrs Amy Horne, of Sydenham, head injuries and shock, condition serious; Miss Emily Wilson, sister of Miss Gladys Wilson, injuries to the back, condition not serious; Mr Clarence George Nicholas, Journeyman butcher, of Woolston, driver of the car, cuts and abrasions; Mrs Verna Nicholas, wife of the driver, shock and abrasions. There were also two young children' in the car, one of whom suffered a fractured arm. Later. There is no change in the condition of Mrs Wilson and Mrs Horne. QIRL FOUND UNCONBCIOUS FOXTON, Monday Enes Lumsden (13), daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Lumsden, of Foxton Beach, was found unconscious in some poplars near the river front last night by some residents, who were attracted by hearing a snoring noise. A doctor and the poli.ce were called, and the girl was removed to hospital. WELLINGTON MAN DROWNED WIFE’S RESCUE EFFORT FAILS (By Teleg-rapb.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Mr J. McConchie, 102 Te Aro Road, Wellington, was drowned at Evans’ Bay shortly after noon and his wife is in hospital with shock. They were ; fTshing in the Bay when a boy’s hat! flew into the water. Mr McConchie ] went in after it and got into difficulties. His wife went to his aid but he disappeared before she was able to reach him. The body has not been recovered. DROP OF BO FEET PALMERSTON N., Sunday Miss Helen Clulow was admitted to the hospital to-day as the result of a car in which she was a passenger going over a 50ft. bank. Her sister Rosalie, and the driver of the car, Mr Cyril Sinclair, escaped with minor injuries. KNOCKED FROM CYCLEB CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Mr William O'Callaghan (38), of Belfast, was -seriously injured when his cycle was struck by a motor car on St. John's Road, Belfast. Maurice Lewis (16) while cycling collided with a motor car, sustaining injuries to his head and chest. His condition is serious. GATEKEEPER’S DEATH (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Tuesday Mr Arthur Cole (64), a gatekeeper at the Ellerslie racecourse, collapsed while at the turnstiles. He was conveyed to the hospital where he died shortly after midnight. FATAL FALL FROM TRAIN (Special to Times) TE KUITI, Monday Mrs Helen Augusto Stubbington, of Maranui, fell from a train whilst it was passing over the Waitete Viaduct and sustained injuries to which she succ umber shortly after admission to the hospital.
