HAMILTON'S PROGRESS

BUILDING FIGURES REMARKABLE INCREASE 300 HOUSES IN THREE YEARS The contention that Hamilton has never shown such rapid propress as it has don© during the 12 months that have just passed Is ade'Mirtely proved by the Anal building permits for the year Issued by the Hamilton Borough Council.

The figures show a remarkable Increase on the figures for the previous year despite the fact that last year’s totals represented a very marked Increase on the figures for the year before. The total value of the building work done within the borough over the past twelve months was £239,435, this being over £IOO,OOO more than the previous year, and over £200,000 more than in 1931 and 1932. The building activity has not been confined to any one portion of the borough, new houses being erected in nearly every locality', while a large number of new business blocks have also been built. During the year 320 permits were issued and of these 118 were for new houses, the remainder being for new business blocks or alterations to houses and business premises. The value of the permits reached £239,435 —a record figure for the town. The figures for the individual months are:— 1937

Figures For Seven Years An interesting comparison of the building figures issued by the Hamilton Borough Council over the past seven years is given below:—■ New

houses have been erected in Hamilton over the past three years, there is still a definite acute shortage of dwelling houses, and it is not anticipated that the position will be very much relieved for some considerable time. Contracts have been let for 59 State houses in Hamilton already, and many of these will be ready for occupation at an early date, but until the major scheme of 160 houses in the' Garden Suburb at Hayes Paddock, Hamilton East, is completed the shortage will continue to force would-be residents to live in some other town.
