AMBERGRIS FOUND

NEAR WAIKATO HEADS HAMILTON RESIDENT’S LUCK PIECE WEIGHING NEARLY *2l LBS One of the largest pieces of ambergris found for years on a New Zealand beach, was discovered by a Hamilton resident, Mr A. J. Parker, on the Muioro beach about four miles from the Waikato Heads, on Sunday. Mr Parker and a friend were hunting for ambergris on the sca-shore when they came upon a piece weighing about 21 lbs. It was lying well above the water mark and indications were that it had been washed up comparatively recently. When the substance was submitted to an expert for examination it was said to lie of fairly good quality and was probably belter inside. l'rom outside appearances it was a light grey colour and closely resembled limestone. Ambergris is a variegated inflammable substance produced in the intestines of the cachelol 'or sperm whale and generally found floating on the j sea. It is used for flavouring and pre- | years ago it. was selling on the market at about £3 an ounce, but the price iregulated by the quality.
