CARDINAL’S HAT

TO BE WORN ONCE ARCHBISHOP HINSLEY’S ELEVATION (Times Air Mail Service.) LONDON, Dec. 14 Only once in his life will Dr. Arthur Hinsley, Archbishop of Westminster, wear the “Red Hat” which was conferred upon him yesterday, when the Pope named him as one of five new Cardinals at a secret Consistory at the Vatican, says the Daily Mirror. That will be on Thursday. The “Red Hat” —insignia of his rank as Prince of the Church of Rome—will then be handed to Cardinal Hinsley at a public Consistory. The next time Cardinal Hinsley wears it will be in his tomb.

The Pope’s messengers yesterday arrived at the English College in Rome bearing the news that Dr. Hinsley had been elected to the Sacred College. Cardinal Hinsley remained in seclusion and prayer. By tradition Dr. Hinsley went to Home ‘‘on a casual visit.” He is supposed to know nothing of his elevation until he receives a summons from the Pope to attend the Consistory. For the first time in 400 years Yorkshire has a Cardinal of her own. The last Yorkshire Cardinal was John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, executed in 1535—a month after the announcement that he had been made a Cardinal—and it was said that Henry VIII vowed he would not leave Fisher a head on which to place his Hat.
