THE ROWAN-TREE FAIRY A fairy lives in our rowan-tree, I know she does I She waves to me! In summer time she wears a frock Green and white, like my summer smock; In autumn time A cloak of red And scarlet berries on her head She wears and then her pretty gown Is orange and russet, Green and brown, In winter time she goes to sleep, All cosily beneath a heap Of fallen leaves Below the tree. But, first, she says “Good-bye!” to So please don’t close my window tight, In case she calls “ Good-bye 1 ” tonight I —Sent by Meryl Williams (10). BEDTIME The stars come out a-peeping In their beds of blue, And the breezes sing a lullaby To sleepy folks like you. The Sandman comes a-creeping In such a stealthy way, And soon he’s right beside you To put an end to play. Mother comes and tells you It’s time to go upstairs; And then she tells a story And you softly sey your prayers. Then you go a-sailing So far away it seems; But really you’re just sleeping In your little boat of dreams. —Elizabeth M. Ilotaling. LOOK PLEASANT We cannot, of course, all be handsome, And it’s hard for us all to be good. We are sure now and then to be lonely. And we don’t always do as we should. To be patient is not always easy. To be cheerful is much harder still, But at least we can always be pleasant, If we make up our minds that we will. And it pays every time to be kindly, Although we ftxel worried and blue; If you smile at the world and look cheerful, The world will soon smile back at you. So brace yourself up and look pleasant, No matter how long you are down, Good humour is always contagious. You banish your friends when you frown.
