HAMILTON GIRL
RELIEVING WOMAN ANNOUNCER PHYLLIS ANCHOR IN BRISBANE A writer in an Australian paper says of a former Hamilton girl:— Thinking That I should like to know something of Phyllis Anchor’s reactions to her new position as Relieving Woman Announcer during the absence of Rita Humfress, who is holidaying in Sydney, I lay in wait for her while she wound up her session, and then deftly (nice word that!) led her into my lair! “Are you getting a bit settled now?” I asked her. “Ye-s, thanks,” she laughed—“it’s been a bit confusing finding where things are,- and who is what and so on—but I think I’ve solved most of the mysteries now l” “This isn’t the first time you’ve handled a Women’s Session, is it?” “Oh, no,” she an-swered, “I had three years’ experience in New Zealand, with both the Women’s and children’s Sessions. Amerloan Cooking “What about Australia?” “2G'B,“ came the reply, “I edited the Children’s Newspaper there, and also did
three Research Sessions every week.
“So,” I said, “how long Is it since you left 2GB?” “Eight months,” she answered. “I spent a holiday in the West.” “Then you came here with the Musical Bubbles session?” “Yes—that has been lor the last ten weeks.” “Anything special you’ll be giving us ?”
“One thing I would like to mention,” she said, “and that is that I’m concentrating on American recipes. I’m tremendously keen on American cooking, and I would like to say that any recipe from the .States that I give is easily useable in Brisbane. By which I mean that I’m not going to tell the listeners about some fascinating dish that sounds and tastes simply marvellous, but when they try to cook it they find that half the ingredients are only obtainable in Kentucky or Oshkosh or somewhere 1” “That’s a comfort,” I said; “and what does it feel like to have a microphone in front of you every day, again ?” “It’s the Loveliest Feeling” “Thrilling!” she said. “It’s the loveliest feeling in the world to he back in harness again, even though there is lots to do for the session apart from speaking Into a microphone!” “I daresay,” I said, being an understanding soul, “daily thought and so on, eh?”
“Yes. But it’s all "tremendously enjoyable, and I’m enjoying it thor oughly.”
