THE OLD AND THE NEW
THE MAYOR’S MESSAGE THE NATION TESTED THE HOPE FOR THE FUTURE His Worship the Mayor of Hamilton. Air J. R. Fow, who is spending the vacation at the Waihi Beach, has forwarded the following New Year message ; "As the year 1937 draws rapidly to its close, one naturally turns back to review its outstanding events, and as they pass by in quick succession they furnish something stimulating and inspiring. "For our own Empire unique national problems have arisen of such grave import as to test our readers to the full. Happily the sturdy integrity, no less than the diplomatic experience and sagacity of our statesmen, prevails. They faced a great crisis with dignity and courage, and emerged triumphant, with Royalty established more firmly than ever on the throne, and throughout the whole realm a deepseated feeling of satisfaction and security.
“In our own land we might almost describe 1937 as the turn of the tide. As we parted with the year 1936, with its joys and its sorrows, its gloomy days and Its sunny tomorrows. many looked with anxious eyes to the dawn of a New Year, wondering what the coming days would unfold.
“To the many the doors of hope opened, the clouds of depression passed, prosperity once more smiled, and all the marks of human progress were displayed in a wider tolerance and a more humanitarian national outlook.
“So as we face the beginning of a new year, and I can think no better message than this: —
“May the indomitable spirit of the pioneers, their study of Independence and sublime trust In Providence, be revived In our day, so that we may, like them, bequeath a priceless heritage of progress and liberty to bless succeeding years."
JOHN R. FOW, Mayor,
