AN AUDACIOUS BOOKMAKER OPENLY OPERATES AT ELLERSLIE (By Telegraph—Prp«a As«»nriatlon) AUCKLAND, Thursday ‘‘Pretty cheeky, wasn’t it?” commented the magistrate. Mr F. K. Hunt, when the police explained a charge against Ivan Turner (38), a wharf labourer, of carrying on business as a bookmaker at Ellerslie on Monday. “ This man and his penciller took up a position under the board where the dividends are posted,” said DetectiveSergeant McHugh. “He was doing a big business and paying a limit of £lO for first and £3 for second horses. He had taken 50 bets, ranging from 2s 6d to £l. and had £23 in his possession when caught. We didn't get the penholds., the money.” Turner was fined £25 or a month’s imprisonment, being allowed 48 hours in which to pay.
