BIBLE AND SHAKESPEARE BOND OF COMMON SERVICE (From a Correspondent) LONDON, December 1 Major-General Sir Frederick Maurice, addressing the American Legionaries in London this week, declared that Shakespeare and the English version of the Bible were sufficient to keep any two English-speaking peoples together. Sir Frederick, who is president of the British Legion, said that they were linked by the bond of common service during the Great War, 1 it there were even more enduring links between Britain and the United States. They were bound by history, law, common institutions and literature. Times must come when their interests j diverged, but the lies that bound them were strong enough to stand the strain. A special message of welcome from the Duke of Gloucester, patron of Hie British Empire Service League, was read, lie expressed the hope that the visit of I lie. Legionaires would be a pleasant one and that it would further strengthen the lies between the two nations. .Mr Daniel J. Doherty, National Commander of the American Legion, said lie l'clt sure that the bond of comradeship conceived in the crucible of war would do much to make the amity between the two great Englishspeaking peoples a lasting one. A welcome was also extended by FieldMarshal Lord Milne, grand president of the British Empire Service League.
