WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT MELVILLE The December meeting of th*> Melville Women's Institute was held in Mahoe Street at the home of the president, Mrs M. Buckland. There was a small attendance of members, many apologies being received owing to sickness and holidays. The motto for the month was "The way to be happy oneself is to make others happy.” One new member was welcomed. A good display of flowers from the district was entered in the summer show of the Hamilton Horticultural Society. During the month a concert party entertained the inmates of the Bailey Ward. Mrs Buckland and Mrs C. Jlaverbier won social competitions. The vase of flowers competition was won by Mrs M. Buckland, with Mrs Prisk second. Afternoon lea was served by the ladies of Hie committee.

AT HOROTIU

The December meeting of the Horotin Institute was held in the hall on December 10. Mrs Monaghan presiding over a fair attendance. After the business discussions a happy and informal lime was sppnt. Mesdames Owsley and Regbie being winners of Die competition. Mrs Owsley thanked members for the gifts to the Sunshine League, and spoke of the league’s aetivities. The points prize, a gift article costing not more than 2s fid, was won by Miss Harwood, with Mrs Washer second. The next meeting will be held on the second Friday in February. After afternoon lea. Die season’s greetins-s were exchanged and the meeting closed with Hie singing of the National Anthem.

AT GORDONTON

The (iordonlon Women's institute held the December meeting under the lovely, shady trees at the residence of Mrs .1. Bradding. The president, Mrs D. Sainsbury. presided over a large allendanee of members and visitors. The meeting opened with Hie reading of Hie Hr I. after which business was dealt with. gmiil garden lias some weeds," wa« taken by Mrs Drummond.

Mrs Bradding gave a most Interesting and useful demonstration of chenille work. A novelty competition was won by Mrs Proctor In the senior and Miss L. O'Hearn in the junior class. Mrs Borman gained first and second prizes for the monthly flower competition. The entertainment for thp afternoon was given by the junior matrons as follows: Pianoforte solos. Mrs Frear; songs, Mrs L. Harman; elocutionary items, Mrs Watkins. An amusing play entitled "A Baw Recruit" was acted by Mesdames S. Watt and E. McMullen. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames K. Mclnteer, A. Gower and R. Lister. The February meeting will be held in Mrs W. J. Bridgman’s garden. AT MOTUMAOHO The Motumaoho Women's Institute held an enjoyable meeting recently. Mrs H. Lenan presided. Seventeen hooks were received from the Cauford Cliffs Institute in Dorsetshire, England, as a Christmas gift to the members. Mrs Seville, of Morrinsville, gave an instructive talk on “What lo do till the doctor comes.” A practical demonstration of the correct way to apply fomentations was given, and the best methods of treating convulsions, croup, scalds and haemorrhages were dealt with. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Seville. A competition for a Christmas gift not to cost more than 2s resulted ns follows: Mrs Warren 1, Miss D. Freegard 2. Mrs Lyndon won the coconut ice competition. Mesdames Seville and Mrs Simpson, of Morrinsville, judged tiie competitions. Children’s Garden Party The Motumaoho Women's Institute held a most enjoyable garden parly for tiie children of the district on Saturday at “Truro,” kindly lent byMr Brown. Games of ail kinds were enjoyed and ire creams and fruit drinks wc-e served lo the children. Willing helpers served lunch under Hie shade of the trees. A bran tub. with dips for the small children, proved popular in charge of Mrs Wilson and Mrs T. Stark. Mr Mucker, assisted by Mr Harbottle, kindly helped with the races and j games, and Misses D.
