SEVERE CRASH
DIRECTOR KILLED MOTOR-CAR 80 MERB AULTS PASSENGERS ESCAPE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Mr John Horatio Hayward, of Maunu, Whangarei, a director of the Farmers’ .Trading Company, was killed Instantly this morning when hla sedan car oame Into collision with a light dellvary van driven by Mr w. Burrell, of Papwtoetoe, on a roadway Interaction at Otahuhu. Mr Hayward’s car, which carried -as passengers Mr A. A. Ross, chairman of directors of the Farmers' Trading Company, and Mr H. E. Worsp. chairman of directors of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company, was proceeding southward. The vehicles met in a violent collision, the bonnet of the van striking the centre of the car near the rear of the driver’s seat. The car completely somersaulted and was badly damaged. The headlamps of the van wrere smashed and the mudguards were badly dented. The driver of the van and the passengers in the car escaped with a severe shaking. An Inquest was opened at Otahuhu and adjourned after evidence of identification.
The collision brought to a traglo end the directors’ fishing trip to Taupo. They were on their way to join thef managing director of the Farmers’ Trading Company, Mr R. A. Laidlaw, for a holiday at his fishing lodge and intending to return on Sunday.
The party intended calling at Mr R. D. Duxflelds farm at Horotiu to-day and Mr Duxfield was to have Joined them on the trip to Taupo.
