The English county cricket competitions were continued, with the following results; — Essex v. Yorkshire.—Essex, first innings, 184 (Verity four for 48) ; second Innings, 163 (Bowes, seven for ' 56). Yorkshire, first Innings, 279 ! (Sutcliffe 83) ; second Innings, none i for 69. Yorkshire won by 10 wickets. I Lancashire v. Sussex. —First Innings, I eight for 640 declared (Paynter 322, Washbrook 118, Oldfield 92); Sussex, first innings, 340 (H. Parks 98). Following on they made 295 (Cox 115). Lancashire won by an innings and five ; runs.
I Middlesex v. Worcestershire. —MldI dlesex, first innings 327 (Hendren j 87). Worcestershire, first Innings 121 1 (Gray, five for 38, Smith five for 32). ; Following on they made 205. Middlesex won by an innings ad 1 run. Gloucestershire v. Glamorganshire. —Gloucester, first nnings 319 .Hammond 121); second Innings, two for 162 declared (Hammond 63). Glanmorganshire, first innings 135 ) Goddard five for 58) ; second innings, 91 (Goddard, eight for 41). Gloucestershire won by 255 runs. Hampshire v. Warwickshire. I Hampshire, first innings 509 (Moore , 316). Warwickshire, first. Innings 185 ! (Herman, five for 4). Following on J they made 181 (Creese, seven for 85). I' Hampshire won by an innings and 143 runs. Northamptonshire v. Somersetshire. : Northamptonshire, first Innings 158; j second innings, 160. Somersetshire, I first innings 320 (F. Lee 115). Someri setshire won by an innings and two '■ runs. Kent v. Nottinghamshire. Kent, • first innings, five for 467 declared J (Ames 98, Sunnocks 162, Todd (not lout) 100). Nottinghamshire, first Innings 190 (Keeton (not out) 99, Wright six for 47). Following on they lost nine for 468 (Hardstaff .146, Gunn 135). Kent won on the first innings. ! Lancashire’s eight for 640 and I Hampshire’s 509 were made on the ; first day. Paynter Breaks Records. ' Pavnter’s 322 was scored in 300 'minutes, and included three sixers and
39 fours. He broke several records It was his second century before lunci this season, and his fifth century foi the season.
It was the highest score ever made by a Lancashire professional, and broke Victor Trumper’s 1899 record for the highest score against Sussex.
R. H. Moore’s (Hampshire captain) 316 against Warwickshire is a Hampshire record.
